Hub & Spoke
From October 2025, new hub & spoke legislation opened the door for independent pharmacies and groups alike to embrace automation in a way that was never possible before. At the same time, the Government’s 10-Year Health Plan is reshaping community pharmacy’s role, moving the focus from dispensing towards prevention, digital integration, and clinical care.
Hub and Spoke dispensing allows pharmacies to streamline how medicines are prepared and supplied. Under this system, a central “hub” pharmacy uses automation to assemble prescriptions on behalf of “spoke” pharmacies, which then supply the medicines directly to patients. This approach reduces repetitive workload, increases accuracy and efficiency, and frees pharmacists to focus more on patient care and clinical services.

Hub and Spoke: How Does It work?
The Human Medicines Regulations 2012 ammendement has come into affect to make Hub and Spoke possible for all pharmacies across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The Hub may assemble medicines for a spoke (the pharmacy) they don't own, allowing pharmacies to utilise hubs to remove the manual work form the pharmacy and create more time for services and other key roles of a pharmacist.
